What is the LU Engineering Apprenticeship?

If you want an exciting career in a hands-on engineering environment, the LU Engineering Apprenticeship is one of the most highly regarded in the UK.

Maintaining and modernising the oldest tube network in the world is full of challenges. Working in this area doesn't just involve using a variety of new and old technologies - it often means finding unique solutions to engineering problems. LU Engineering staff make sure that the tube system runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible during this period of major upgrades.

There are a number of different schemes under the LU Engineering Apprenticeship, all aimed at ensuring you develop the right skills for the right areas. At the moment, these are:

  • Civil Engineering Apprenticeship
  • Railway Engineering Workshop Apprenticeship
  • Escalators and Pumps Apprenticeship
  • Fleet Maintenance Apprenticeship
  • Carpentery Apprenticeship

Who do we need?

We're looking for highly motivated people with an interest and aptitude for the practical side of engineering. Our engineers need to keep up to date with the latest methods and technologies, so you'll be keen to learn all about your chosen field. You'll also understand the importance of health and safety.

You'll develop the skills and experience you need for a successful engineering career through a combination of on-the-job and classroom training. Under the watchful eye of our experienced staff, you'll be applying your skills to real life situations and playing a vital part in maintaining and improving London Underground.

What will I get?

You'll begin with an induction which will tell you all about your role and how it fits into Transport for London and London Underground. Your first year's training will be based at our purpose-built training centre where you'll learn all the basics and core skills, including the use of specialised tools.

This will lead to a level 2 NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations, which is designed to give you a foundation for your future training. You'll continue your study with lots of hands-on training at various locations across the London Underground network to build up your skills to a high level.

We want our staff to pass on their skills and expertise to the next generation of engineers in LU. Once you've completed your apprenticeship, you'll have everything you need to build a career in your chosen area.

Regretfully, we are not accepting applications to the LU Engineering Apprenticeship this year.  We will begin recruiting for the next intake of this scheme early in 2012.
